Smoke Photography

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

After a wonderful two weeks in Orlando visiting my family, I realized that I was short on time before having to submit my works for an exhibition in Nassau.

Since the theme of the exhibition is “Neues” (New), I decided to try something new – photographing smoke – hoping that I could produce something for the show.

It turned out to be relatively simple. I used a stick of incense against a black background with a flash set off to the right and behind the burning incense. This gave me a shutter speed of 250 – high enough to capture the smoke.

Using Photoshop, the results can be manipuled quite easily – colors added, mirroring the image, inverting and so forth.

I ended up with some different looking images – “Neues” for me – that I’ve just dropped off. The opening is next Friday – it’ll be interesting to see how the images are received.
