FAIL or Not Being Used as an Office Decorator

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I started out wanting to do the art festival route. But unfortunately, here in Germany, photography is not considered art so that door is closed, locked and the key hidden. So, I found myself doing exhibitions. It started out slow but picked up speed the last couple of years. I enjoy talking with people about what I see behind the viewfinder and how I achieved what I did through my post digital processing.

But, I found myself having to draw the line between exhibiting at an establishment and being used as a cheap (and uninsured) way to decorate an office. I exhibited – or should I say furnished – a heilpraktikerschule (an alternative medicine non-medical school) in Frankfurt for nine months. In those nine months, nothing was done by the school to publicize the exhibition…no sign in the lobby, no website mention…nothing. Since I had a large solo exhibition coming up the end of the year, I made my intent known to the head of the school – along with the group that I was exhibiting with – that I would be picking up my photographs to exhibit elsewhere. Since no one else came forward to fill the space, the hallway where my photos resided for nine months remained bare.

Six months later, it’s still being talked about. We explained my reasons for not wanting to exhibit there again – the frames were filthy dirty, the glass streaked and greasy. They clearly had not seen a dust rag in nine months and it took – no kidding – half a roll of paper towels to get them thoroughly clean. Not to mention the fact that they were the nicest frames that I have and had museums glass – alone, I paid upwards of 200 Euro each. That was around 1600 Euro worth of frames hanging there – uninsured. And, since I seemed to be the only one publicizing the fact that I have photos on exhibit there, I saw – and still see – no reason to return.

As I said, I do enjoy exhibiting my photos and will continue to do so. I currently have one exhibition running and have four more scheduled through the end of the year. But my office decoration days are over.

Smoke Photography

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

After a wonderful two weeks in Orlando visiting my family, I realized that I was short on time before having to submit my works for an exhibition in Nassau.

Since the theme of the exhibition is “Neues” (New), I decided to try something new – photographing smoke – hoping that I could produce something for the show.

It turned out to be relatively simple. I used a stick of incense against a black background with a flash set off to the right and behind the burning incense. This gave me a shutter speed of 250 – high enough to capture the smoke.

Using Photoshop, the results can be manipuled quite easily – colors added, mirroring the image, inverting and so forth.

I ended up with some different looking images – “Neues” for me – that I’ve just dropped off. The opening is next Friday – it’ll be interesting to see how the images are received.

Exhibition Opening

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

We picked up another member of the artists group and drove to Frankfurt to attend the 6pm reception at the Paracelsus school where we are exhibiting. We arrived about 6:15 and were surprised at how many people were already there.

Since the director had asked if I would take a few shots, I had brought my camera equipment. After finding a place to unpack, I started by walking around to admire everyone’s work. We had also brought brochures that I had printed, so Wolf put the holder on the wall near my photos.

I spent some time going through the crowd snapping random photos. I felt a hand on my arm and looked up to see a woman with my brochure asking if I was the photographer. When I said yes, she excitedly told me how much she liked my photos. That happened to me several times during the evening with people asking if they could contact me about purchasing some. I had hoped to gain feedback on my photos, and hearing all the wonderful comments really made my evening.

Another guest with a brochure.

I had taken around fifty brochures with, thinking it would probably be too many. They were almost gone when I left.

We thanked the director for a wonderful evening and the opportunity to exhibit our work. The exhibition will be in place for three months.

Exhibition in Frankfurt

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Once a month, I meet a wonderful group of artists in a restaurant in Nassau to “talk shop” and anything of interest. In February, we met with the director of the Paracelsus school in Frankfurt to discuss exhibiting our work.

Those of us who decided to exhibit met in Frankfurt today to install our artwork in preparation of a reception to be given on March 28 at 6pm.

After hanging the eight photographs I brought, I took a minute to take a few photos of them.

We have, of course, been invited to the reception and look forward to attending.

“Lichtungen – Reflexionen der Fotografie”

Friday, August 1st, 2008

My husband, being an Epson partner, periodically receives their newsletters. In one such newsletter was the announcement that the Epson Kunstbetrieb, located in Düsseldorf, would be holding a workshop for photographers.

I copied several of my photos onto a USB stick and we drove the two hours there. We found the actual workshop to be different than what was mentioned on the newsletter, but we decided to stay. Four workstations were set up where photographers could work on three of their photos, printing the final results on Epson’s large format 9880 and 11880 printers.

The best photos would be assembled for a month long exhibition – entitled “Lichtungen – Reflexionen der Fotografie”.

I received an email from Epson informing me that one of my photos had been chosen for the exhibition. I reviewed the five page contract they sent me and forwarded them the information about myself that they requested.

Since I needed to sign the contract in person, we decided to attend the opening event and arrive early to take care of business beforehand. Afterwards, we took the opportunity to relax at an outside cafe and have some ice cream while we waited for the opening.

As the time approached, we walked towards the entrance and saw the line of people waiting to enter the exhibit.

Opening Event

We stayed for about an hour, watching the people arrive and leave, and viewing the other photos. We also talked with several of the other artists that attended. Like me, they had brought their cameras to record the event. One told a bit of the selection process – there were 300+ photos submitted that 28 were selected from.

We had a glass of champagne, talked to the Epson hosts, then decided to start the two hour drive home.
